For building solid guitar technique, specifically in the Classical style, the etudes (Op. 60) of Matteo Carcassi are extremely helpful. There are 25 studies in this collection with each etude focusing on specific areas of technique and sight reading. Working through these etudes will help the player to be well-rounded in left and right hand technique as well as issues of articulation, tone, dynamics, and melody.
Even more encouraging to the guitar student is that most of these etudes are quite beautiful and can be used in performance. The 2nd, 3rd, and 7th studies are particularly fascinating musically and eminently listenable. It is often frustrating to work through difficult etudes only to have nothing useful to play or perform either for personal edification or for others. Most of the etudes in this collection do not suffer from that problem. This edition includes a superb recording by Paul Henry performing each of these pieces with clarity, beauty, and precision. His example set by the recording will keep you playing these etudes over and over again as you seek to play these works more carefully. Carcassi was a great guitarist and a great instructor. That much is clear from these etudes that he has left to us today.
