As a musical instrument, the guitar has many general advantages over others for those interested in first learning music.
It goes without saying that the guitar has been used successfully in almost every single musical genre imaginable. From the classical interpretations of Segovia, the soaring rock-guitar lines of Journey, the mellow Jazz guitar of Wes Montgomery, and the scorching blues guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The list could go on. The guitar is one of the most versatale instruments in the world. Few instruments have been used so successfully in such a large variety of styles.
This second point is closely related to the first. The great tonal range of possibilities with the guitar is part of what makes it so versatile. There are many different types of guitars, each of which feature a certain tonal range. The acoustic guitar can be used in a nylon or steel string variety with each guitar containing many possible timbres. And, of course, the electric guitar has so many possibilities as well.
3. Beauty and Musicality
There is no doubt about it, the guitar, if used and played properly is a very beautiful and musical instrument. There are some instruments which primarily are played within an ensemble of some kind and we all know certain instruments, that when played alone, have that “screechy” and rather unpleasant sound. While any instrument can be made to sound bad and obnoxious there are some instruments that are more difficult to make sound good on their own. The guitar is not one of them. In the right hands the guitar is capable of some of the most beautiful and exquisite music in the world.
So you think the piano is versatile? You are correct, it is very versatile! But, is it portable? Well, if we are speaking of a “real” grand piano then we must answer with a firm “no”; and all pianists know that a keyboard is not the same. How about an instrument that is supremely versatile and supremely portable? That’s right, its the guitar. Sure, it is isn’t as small as a mandolin or a ukulele but it is also much more versatile than those smaller instruments. For both versatility and portability, the guitar simply has no rival. Sorry pianists!
Considering its versatility, portability, musicality, and tonality, a guitar is really relatively cheap. Certainly one can get a decent beginner guitar for $300 or so and beyond that there are many good and affordable guitars if you know where to shop and what to look for. For someone who is first trying an instrument, the guitar is really low on the cost factor when considered along with its other many virtues.
